Vista supports floppies, USB keys, CD & DVD drives. 3.1 Installing the Driver during Operating System Installation -------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Boot the system using the Microsoft Windows Vista CD. 2. Follow the screen instructions until you reach the "Where do you want to install Windows?" section. 3. Select "Drive options (advanced)" 4. Press on "New" to create a partition to install Vista, select the size in MB and press "Apply" (it is recommended to use at least 20GB), 5. Select "Load Driver" and browse to the location where you have copied the Vista driver. 6. Select the RAID controller used for the installation. The system will automatically select one controller. Press "Next". 7. After the driver loads you will return to the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen (partitions can be configured on this screen), press "Next" again to continue the installation process as usual. NOTE: Dell PERC 5 RAID controllers have Vista native support. The OS installation can be executed using the native driver. In this case, when the installation completes the PERC driver should be updated, see the "3.3 Updating an Existing Windows Driver" section below for details. 3.2 Installing a Windows Driver for a New RAID Adapter ------------------------------------------------------ Perform the following steps to configure the driver when you add the RAID adapter to a system that already has Windows installed. 1. Power down the system. 2. Install the new RAID adapter in the system. Refer to Hardware Installation for detailed instructions on installing and cabling the RAID adapter in the system. 3. Power on the system. 4. Windows Vista has native support for PERC 5 controllers, the system will identify the new controller and use the native driver. 5. Update with the newer driver following the steps on the next section: "3.3 Updating an Existing Windows Driver" 3.3 Updating an Existing Windows Driver --------------------------------------- Perform the following steps to update the Windows driver for the RAID adapter already installed on your system. NOTE: It is important that you idle your system before you update the driver. 1. Press "Start" > "Control Panel" > "System and Maintenance" > "System". The "View basic information about your computer" screen displays. 2. Click on the "Device Manger" link on the left. The "Device Manger" window opens 4. Click "Storage controller" 5. Double-click the RAID controller for which the driver has to be updated. 6. Click the "Driver" tab and click on "Update Driver..." button. The screen for the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard displays. 7. Insert the appropriate media (driver diskette/USB key/CD/DVD). 8. Click "Browse my computer for driver software" 9. Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" 10.Click the "Have Disk" button and browse to the appropriate location. 11.Select the RAID controller and click "Next" 12.The new driver will be uploaded, close all windows and restart your computer for the changes to take effect. 4.0 Fixes or Enhancements in this Release ========================================= 1. DeviceType on the Device Manager display has been corrected to show the proper device type: RAID 2. Disk Timeout has been increased from 60 seconds to 65 seconds to safely allow drives to complete recovery. NOTE: These changes are between the PERC 5 native driver and the current driver. 5.0 Additional Information ========================== None 6.0 Known Issues ================ 1. In Windows, deletion of a virtual disk, followed by creation of a virtual disk without initialization may result in a blue screen when attempting to format. Workaround - Fast initialization of the drive (the default option when creating a disk) before formatting will prevent this issue. As mentioned in the PERC5 Users Guide, please initialize all disks before usage, unless attempting data recovery.
